The Three Stages of Menopause: Can We Finally Talk About It?

There comes a moment in many women's lives when we find ourselves standing in front of the refrigerator wondering why we opened the door...only to realize we're having a hot flash while wearing a sweater.

Or perhaps you've found yourself awake at 2:00 a.m. thinking, "I used to sleep all night. What happened?"

Symptoms can look different for every woman. You may experience hair thinning, hot flashes, mood swings, trouble sleeping, skin changes, vaginal dryness, painful intercourse, changes in sexual desire, brain fog—or perhaps only a few of these.

If this sounds familiar, take a deep breath.

You're not losing your mind.

You're not alone.

Welcome to menopause.

For many of our mothers and grandmothers, menopause was rarely discussed. Women quietly endured hot flashes, sleepless nights, mood swings, and countless questions because it was simply considered "part of getting older."

Thankfully, those days are behind us.

Today, women are talking, sharing their experiences, and discovering that there are many ways to support their bodies through this natural transition.

Menopause happens in three stages.

Perimenopause is when hormones begin to shift. You may experience irregular periods, hot flashes, night sweats, brain fog, fatigue, mood changes, trouble sleeping, weight gain or bloating, and even hair thinning.

Menopause officially begins after you've gone 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period. As hormone levels decline, caring for your heart, bones, muscles, and emotional well-being becomes increasingly important.

Postmenopause is the next chapter. Some women continue to notice changes such as vaginal dryness, skin and hair changes, lower interest in sex, occasional forgetfulness, or an increased risk of osteoporosis.

Here's something every woman deserves to hear:

Not every amazing woman experiences all of these symptoms.

Some women have only a few.

Others have many.

And some experience very little at all.

There is no "normal" menopause.

There is only your menopause.

The encouraging news is that medicine has come a long way. Today there are more options than ever to help women feel their best, including healthy nutrition, strength training, stress management, better sleep habits, hormone therapy for appropriate candidates, non-hormonal medications, and other evidence-based treatments. You don't have to simply "put up with it."

Perhaps the greatest change is that women are finally talking about menopause.

We're laughing about the hot flashes.

Sharing our experiences.

Supporting one another.

And realizing we're not alone.

Menopause doesn't mean the end of feeling vibrant, confident, or beautiful. It can be the beginning of a healthier, stronger, and more intentional chapter of life.
